Credit Transfer & PLA Pathways

Clear Pathways for Prior Learning Assessment

University of Brookstone recognizes that many adult and non-traditional students already bring valuable academic, professional, military, workplace, and certification-based learning. Our Prior Learning Assessment pathway helps eligible students understand how previous learning may be evaluated toward academic credit consideration.

Value Your Experience

Relevant learning from previous study, work experience, and professional training may help reduce time, cost, and repeated coursework.

What Is Prior Learning Assessment?

Prior Learning Assessment, often called PLA, is a structured academic review process used to evaluate learning a student has gained outside a traditional classroom. This may include professional experience, previous college-level coursework, workplace training, military learning, licenses, certifications, or documented skill development.

UOB uses PLA and credit transfer review to help students avoid repeating learning they have already completed, where that learning is relevant, verifiable, college-level, and aligned with the selected program requirements.

PLA does not guarantee automatic credit. Every request is reviewed according to documentation quality, academic fit, program level, course outcomes, institutional policy, and graduation requirements.

What May Be Considered for PLA?

Students may submit documented evidence of previous learning for review. The strongest applications include clear proof, learning outcomes, dates, hours, and relevance to the selected academic program.

Previous Academic Credits

Official transcripts, completed courses, diplomas, or recognized academic study may be reviewed for possible transfer into a related UOB program.

Work Experience

Professional roles, leadership duties, technical responsibilities, and workplace projects may be considered when they demonstrate college-level learning.

Professional Certifications

Industry certifications, licenses, continuing education, and professional training may support PLA when documentation is current and verifiable.

Non-Traditional Learning

Military training, employer programs, portfolios, competency records, or documented independent learning may be reviewed where applicable.

How UOB Evaluates Prior Learning

UOB reviews PLA requests through an academic evaluation process. The purpose is to determine whether prior learning is equivalent in level, scope, content, and outcomes to the courses or requirements within the student’s chosen program.

Students are encouraged to speak with admissions before enrollment so they can understand available options, required documents, possible limitations, and how approved credits may affect program duration or tuition planning.

  • Evaluation is based on documented, verifiable, and relevant prior learning.
  • Approved credits must align with the selected program’s academic outcomes and level.
  • PLA decisions are subject to institutional policy, maximum transfer limits, and graduation requirements.

PLA Documentation Students May Prepare

Complete documentation helps the academic review team evaluate learning more efficiently and accurately.

Official Transcripts

Academic records from prior institutions help determine course level, credit value, grades, completion dates, and transfer relevance.

Certificates & Licenses

Professional certifications, licenses, badges, continuing education records, and training confirmations may support credit consideration.

Professional Portfolio

Work samples, project summaries, job descriptions, supervisor letters, and competency evidence may help demonstrate applied learning.

Training Details

Course outlines, training hours, assessment methods, learning objectives, and provider details help establish academic equivalency.

Verification

UOB may request verification from institutions, employers, training providers, licensing bodies, or certifying organizations.

Policy Review

Students should review maximum credit limits, residency requirements, program restrictions, and graduation standards before applying PLA credits.

Prior Learning Assessment Process

UOB follows a clear pathway so students understand what to submit, how review works, and how decisions are communicated.

01

Initial Guidance

Speak with admissions or an academic advisor about your background, selected program, possible credit transfer options, and documentation requirements.

02

Document Submission

Submit transcripts, certificates, portfolio evidence, work records, training outlines, or other supporting documents for academic review.

03

Academic Evaluation

The review team evaluates relevance, learning level, evidence quality, credit equivalency, and alignment with program outcomes.

04

Credit Decision

Approved credits are communicated to the student and may be applied according to program rules, institutional limits, and graduation requirements.

Built for Adult & Non-Traditional Students

PLA helps qualified students move forward without ignoring the learning, experience, and skills they already have.
